Tears of Healing

Tears of Healing

Today a clients story made me cry, like really cry, but for the first time they were tears of joy not sorrow.

This person had been in treatment for several years with little reported progress primarily due to their overwhelming life circumstances.  When transferred to me they were initially defensive and expressed a lack of hope in their situation.  Painfully so, not long after our first meeting they attempted to take their life.  However, the severity of the situation provided the opportunity for them to open up to the healing process.

A year or so later today they arrived for a session and to my surprise inform me that as a result of the therapy and support provided that they were able to under supervision of their psychiatrist get off all of their psychiatric medications.  They explained that their life circumstances had not changed much in fact they continued to experience nearly the same level of environmental stressors – these were things beyond their control.  The difference between then and now was their ability to weather these emotional storms and ride out the waves.  Their new more empowered perspective allowed for them to see and accept both the ups and downs of life.   They learned to swim in the depths of their emotions and breath even when seemingly under water.

This story provided evidence that healing is possible despite a person’s lack of belief.   I had on first draft written that belief was needed, I no longer even believe you need to initially believe.  You just have to be open to trying.   Image of Dr. Zeus’s, Green Eggs and Ham comes to mind.   Maybe cause as a therapist I often feel like Daniel (the one harassing Sam to try the eggs; I say it’s cause he understands the truth, which is why no matter how many times Sam says no, he doesn’t discourage – he knows.)

I truly am passionate about what I do everyday but it is these moments that really make me see how blessed I am to have chosen this path, or it having chosen me.  My heart further grows and expands in the process of healing others.
